Project Evaluation

Throughout this unit, I feel that I have been given the chance to explore and develop my ideas in terms of beauty on the fashion side, as perviously it has been film and tv. I think that I prefer this unit and I am glad we got to touch on this and I think that you can see this in the final work that I produced.

The unit has enabled me to become more professional as I have had to work on various different models, which lets me build a more professional approach to not only the technical side but as well as the way I handle myself while working.
I have also found that I have overcame my apprehension of asking people to model for me as at the beginning of the unit I struggled to find models but I feel that I have subdued it and managed to acquire different people.

The workload of the project has allowed me to prepare myself for my Final Major Project as I think that the idea of shooting this much as well as finding models and editing all put together resembles the process of producing a Final Major Project. I am positive that there will be twice as much work and effort put it in to create my FMP but I think that this project has been a taster for what we will have to achieve. I am glad I have had the chance to manage multiple tasks at once as I think it has prepared me for my final year.

In terms of my work that I have produced, I am pleased with my final images and the editing. I think that if I had more time I would have considered to reshoot my advertisement look 1 as I feel that the images weren’t as strong because it was the first look that I shot on the day and the model got more comfortable as the day went on, which I feel is quite normal when it comes to shooting. Other than that, I think my images that co-ordinated shows how I have progressed from last year in terms of editing, photography and my skills as a make-up artist and hairstylist. I think that I have grasped the flow of how much background work you need to do to in-order to achieve quality images and to communicate your ideas.

To conclude, I feel that I have managed to showcase my skills and how I have progressed throughout my work. I think that I have become more independent within my work and it has come as a benefit to my work. Although, I do feel that there is always room for improvement and I will ensure that I will take into account the feedback for this unit when I come to producing work in my final year.

Brand Evaluation

Yves Saint Laurent has become a renowned brand in itself. The work that Yves Saint Laurent put in to his company really made it the brand today. He continuously produced collection after collection each year as well as dabbling in the beauty world. His dedication to work has successfully made YSL the brand it is today.

Yves Saint Laurent started working at Dior at the age of nineteen in 1955. (Mears & McClendon, 2015) This is where he began his journey in the fashion world.

After the sudden death of Christian Dior in 1957, Yves Saint Laurent was named the successor of Dior and began his work there. (Mears & McClendon, 2015)

In 1958, he showcased his first couture collection at Dior which was highly successful. (Mears & McClendon, 2015) After two years, Yves Saint Laurent was forced to resign, in which he produced his last collection for Dior. (Mears & McClendon, 2015)

After successfully suing Dior for the violation of contract, he opened his couture house in 1962 in Paris. He produced couture collections and then in 1964 YSL decided to release the first ever fragrance, ‘Y’. (Mears & McClendon, 2015)

In 1965, J.Mack Robinson, a businessman who invested in Yves Saint Laurent, sold YSL to the American cosmetic company, Charles of the Ritz. This is how YSL Beauté came about. (Mears & McClendon, 2015)

In the 70s, Saint Laurent announced his work of a ready-to-wear collection. This was also when the Rive Gauche perfume for women was released and the first male fragrance, L’Homme, in which the advertising included nude portraits of Yves Saint Laurent. This really made a mark in the fashion and beauty world as the images are now considered famous. (Mears & McClendon, 2015)
The most successful women’s fragrance by YSL, ‘Opium’ was released in Europe in 1977. The perfume was so popular, the sells exceeded the infamous, Chanel No.5. (Mears & McClendon, 2015)
This was where the success of YSL Beauté took off.

The company is known for producing innovative cosmetics in which are highly successful in the beauty world.

The most famous product, even to today, the YSL Touche Eclat. This product was created by the famous make-up artist, Terry de Gunzburg. She was the creative director of YSL Beauté at the time, where she created this ‘holy-grail’ product. (Blaut, 2013) The product is sold everywhere in the world every ten seconds.

For 2015, YSL created the most unique product on the market, the Volute Tint-in-Oil. This lip product is a glossy tint with nourishing, rich ingredients that leave your lips feeling moisturised. The Volupté tint uses YSL’s Colour Link Infuser technology, ‘which defies the separation of oil and water to distribute evenly throughout the oil.’ (Bilemjian, 2014)

The brand smartly chose the model of the year of 2014, as their face of the product. This in-turn made the product more publicised and promoted.

In 2014, YSL Beauté collaborated with Google Glass to create this new way of make-up application at a YSL counter. “The idea is to capture the application process through the eyes of the professional, empowering the individual to replicate the exact look themselves at home.” (Teather, 2014)

This method of involving upcoming technology in beauty is such a smart way to promote the brand in a positive way. It creates the vision that the brand is so involved in technology, meaning their products must use the highest range of technology to produce the products, which somehow can show the greatness and highest quality of their products.

YSL have the greatest success because of their new innovations and due to their choice of endorsers in the brand. Their marketing schemes are cleverly thought of as the likes of choosing the right person to promote a product and involving themselves in upcoming trends in different areas, such as technology, really enhances the success of a product.

I think the team at YSL Beauté is the strongest handful of people in the beauty industry. Their constant production of new products using scientific explanations really allows the brand to stand out to others. Their use of advertising and promotion of products is also another route of their success story, as they are always known for having the celebrities of the moment.
The brand that has been so successful over many decades will continue to impress the beauty industry with their new innovations.

Overall Editorial 2 Look

              FINAL IMAGE

The second editorial image is following the same theme of the previous one, where it is based on the SS16 ready-to-wear collection. I linked the two editorials to my catwalk images by using the same method of involving chunky glitter on the eyes.

This make-up look is very much focused on the eyes, with the chunky lashes on top and the black glitter under the eye. This look is much more dramatic than the first editorial look and I feel that it compliments the grunge look.
The male make-up is the exact same as I used the images from the same shoot.

                            CLOSE-UP OF THE EYES

The editorial looks are my favourite looks that I have produced. I think that the images fit together and the theme of the shoots come across in the overall images.

Overall Editorial 1 Look

              FINAL IMAGE

For the editorial images, I took inspiration from the 2016 editorial images that YSL produced. I decided to incorporate a male into the image as I wanted to include more styling into the editorial images. The theme of the image is moody grunge, based on the SS16 catwalk show.

For the make-up for the female model, I went with a bleached eyebrow look instead of going for the thicker brow look as I wanted the look to compliment the male model. I also went for a glossy lip as I knew it would be more complementary in black and white compared to a dark colour. For the eyes, I used thick false individual lashes for the top lashes and thinner lashes for the bottom lashes.
For the male make-up, I went with a clean, dewy base and the 'sun-stripping' trend of bronzer across the nose and cheeks. I also did a bleached eyebrow look as I think it compliments the theme of the shoot.

CLOSE-UPS OF MAKE-UP

Overall Advertisement 2 Look

                         FINAL IMAGE

I wanted to stick to the effortless theme for the second advertisement, so I chose a relaxed hairstyle of brushed out curls. I decided to have  the model's hair windswept as I wanted to give the idea of being outside in the city with the background. For the make-up, I created a more darker look but still very spring/summer and colourful. I think the make-up compliments the image well and it works as it looks like it has been created by the collection.

                                  CLOSE-UP OF MAKE-UP

The final advertisement images work well together and I like that I have gone down the relaxed route of of the YSL adverts. I think that the adverts together show the change of being the pretty 'girl-next-door' to the sexier 'girl about town'.

Overall Advertisement 1 Look

                         FINAL IMAGE

For the first advertisement image, I decided to create a day look that was inspired by the spring/summer make-up collection for 2016. I decided that I wanted to create the look by using the products from the range.
The day look consists of highlighted skin with natural peach-toned make-up on the eyes, lips and cheeks.
The idea of the shoot was to have a model that has the 'girl-next-door' look, to make it look effortless with the casual hair-do and the concept of being able to create the look yourself.

I think that the concept of my advertisement was interpreted, however, I feel that the make-up does not show up as strong on camera and I feel that, that is what is weak about the image. However, I feel that the editing helps the image come together.
