Advanced Plaiting

Dutch Braid

A dutch braid consists of the same method of a french plait but instead of bring the strands on top, you bring the each strand under the middle across to the other side.

Waterfall Braid

This plait consists of leaving a strand out of the plait and grabbing another bit of hair to replace the third strand. This then creates the effect of hair falling out the braid and joining the rest of the hair.

Five Strand Plait

A five strand plait is created by using five strands of hair. To start you take an outside piece and bring it over the next piece and then under the third piece. You then have three strands on one side and then two strands on the other side. You then just repeat the process with the three strands.

Eight Strand Plait

An eight strand plait consists of a five strand plait and then a normal three strand plait. After making a five strand plait, I started to create a normal plait and then with the piece of hair closest to the five strand plait, I looped it into the outside piece of the five strand piece. This created the eight strand plait.

Eleven Strand Plait

An eleven strand plait consists of a five strand plait and two three strand plaits. The process is the same as the eight strand plait with another three strand plait on the other side.

All of the different plaits can be used to create different hairstyles such as an updo. Adding plaits can make a hairstyle more modern and high-fashion.

YSL : Advertising Ideas

Looking at the advertising images YSL have produced, I have a clear vision of my ideas for the two looks that I will produce. I want to advertise the whole S/S 16 collection rather than focusing on one product as I want the to create the idea of being able to produce two different looks with the same collection.

One look that I wish to produce is a natural, clean make-up look. I want the vibe of the image to be 'girl next door' with simple, neutral colours.

For the second look, I want to create a night look with the darker colours in the eyeshadow palette. I also want to include a darker lip with perfectly curled hair, almost like the opposite of the first look.

YSL : Editorial Ideas

YSL's catwalk this season relates to the editorial images that they have produced. They have the same grunge vibe with the same styling and hair and make-up so I am considering to relate my looks, however, I have to be sure that you can tell that each look is somewhat different. My ideas are going to similar to the catwalk ideas.

Again, for the eyes I want to incorporate the chunky lashes, whether it be with false lashes or with by clumping the lashes together with mascara. It depends how minimalistic I will want my editorial to be.

I also want to include the coloured mascara as well, that is if I haven't decided to use it in both catwalk looks.

I think I could also create a liner look but with black glitter. I think that this will tie in with the trends and with the clothing of the catwalk and editorial images of the S/S 16 show.

I definitely want the skin to be very dewy and fresh. I want thick brows and youthful, clean skin.

YSL : Catwalk Ideas

I have a few ideas that I hope to go forward into my final looks for this project.

Because YSL have brought out two coloured mascara's in their spring/summer 2016 collection, I want to incorporate this into one of my looks and with it being a trend of S/S 16 I think it would work well in a catwalk look.

I am thinking of also trying to fake bleached eyebrows. I feel that this will complete the look of a high-fashion catwalk.

As for the eyes, the trends that really made me think creatively were the use of glitter and sequins and the mismatched, dramatic doll lashes. These really stuck with me as I was constantly thinking of how I could incorporate these in my looks.

These are a few ideas narrowed down that I may wish to incorporate in my final looks for Catwalk.

S/S 16 - hair trends

Looking at a few spring/summer 2016 hair trends.

A common use of hair accessories appeared on a few catwalks, especially metal hair accessories.

Loose and untidy updo's seem to have appeared on a few shows this spring/summer. This effortless look really screams spring/summer.

An occurring spring/summer hairstyle seems to be braids. Whether it be tight and sleek or messy and loose, the hairstyle always seems to be big in S/S.

The grunge look of messy, bed-hair seemed to run through many shows. The 'undone' look was popular this year on the catwalk.

A sleek hairstyle is always in season, however, this spring/summer it appeared in a lot of shows and many added extra detail within the look.

The hair trends of S/S 16 consisted of a lot of different hairstyles. These are only a few that I found interesting with possibly recreating in my shoots.

S/S 16 - make-up trends

Looking into trends of spring/summer 2016 that caught my eye to consider to corporate into my looks for my shoots.

A big trend os S/S 16 is dewy skin. This trend is well known around the hotter seasons as it appears natural and represents youthful, fresh skin.

Doll-like, dramatic lashes was also a feature on the catwalk of S/S 16. A lot of focus was on the lashes, whether it be dramatic, thick lashes, chunky lashes or coloured lashes; it appeared to be an occurring theme.

The new bronzing trend of 2016 is 'sun-stripping' in which you apply bronzer from cheekbone to cheekbone, creating a bronzed look.

An eye-catching theme was the use of glitter and sequins. This trend uses the glitter and sequins in a high-fashion way without being over-the-top.

Thick, bold brows made an appearance on the catwalks again. With minimal make-up and bold brows, this created a strong look. There was even thick, bleached eyebrows which caught my eye the most.

Under-eyeliner made an appearance, giving the vibe of retro, grunge which always attracts attention as it is effortlessly beautiful.

Minimal make-up also returned to the spring/summer catwalks. This look involved fresh, healthy skin with minimal colour on the cheeks, 'no mascara' mascara and naturally defined eyebrows.

Lip trends included nude lips, dark, vampire lips, glossy lips and bright red lips. These trends seem to appear time and time again.

These trends were some of my favourites of this spring/summer. I am hoping to incorporate some of these trends into my looks for my shoots for this project.

Classic Shapes and Silhouettes

Sleek Ponytail

 To create a sleek ponytail, I sectioned the hair in two parts; a top section at the top of the head that stopped at the crown of the head and a bottom section with the rest of the hair.
To achieve a very clean, sleek ponytail it is best to leave the top section until last to get it smooth. I scraped the bottom section into a ponytail, keeping it at the highest point of that section to get a high ponytail and secured it with a hair bobble. I then combed back the top section of the hair, ensuring it was completely smooth. I secured this with a bungee hair tie as this holds it in place without moving the hair, it is also easier to secure than a bobble as a bobble may move the hair creating bumps in the sleek top. I then took a small section of hair and wrapped it around the bobbles to hide them, creating a neater finish.
This method of a sleek ponytail is an easier way to achieve a super smooth finish. This is because it is less hair to deal with at once and it is easier to correct if it does not go successful the first time.

Quiff Ponytail

To create a quiff ponytail, it is the same process as the sleek ponytail, however you leave the top section to create a quiff.

To get the lift of a quiff with it being secure as well, the hair needs to be backcombed. I sectioned took sections of hair from the front of the head to the crown of the head, backcombing each section gently. I then pulled all the hair back, combing the top of the quiff to smooth it out and pinned it securely with kirby grips.

French Twist/Pleat

I started with taking the crown section of hair and clipping it up, out of the way. I then curled the bottom section with a curling tong, ensuring to curl away from the face. I then backcombed each curl, subtly, and also the top section of hair.

Then I pulled back the top section, combing it ensuring it was smooth. I the pinned it, allowing a bit of lift.

Taking the bottom section, I started to comb the section to the side, smoothing the back comb. I then took a small section of it and pinned it slightly off-centre and pinned it with grips, in a line with the last grip pointing downwards. I then took the outer section and twisted upwards on the other pinned hair. Making it presentable, I then pinned it with hair pins.

For a more avant-garde look, I backcombed the hair a lot more and left the top section until last as this allows manipulation to create more extravagant looks.
